These modifications to the grading standards for this question are very helpful, but they also raise issues for teachers as they plan for their instruction in the coming school year. One positive step taken by the revision was to address a major complaint raised by teachers about the original rubric.
Many instructors—myself included—complained the rubric was simply not an effective grading tool. Now, students are awarded a point when they recognize and account for "historical complexity by explicitly illustrating relationships among historical evidence… [through] contradiction and corroboration"—exactly what a sound essay should do.
This is a good step forward. In addition, the revised rubric has reduced the number of documents to be used in a DBQ answer from seven to six. The rubric now also requires students to identify one component—such as point of view, intended audience, etc. And, as a bi-product of these modifications, student answers are likely to be more thoughtful and more fully developed. Further, the revised rubric addresses the issue of contextualization more clearly. Students are now instructed to connect their argument to events, developments, or processes immediately relevant to the question and the time period.
Students now understand that they can add background to their topic early in their essay by relating the topic under consideration to similar developments around the same time period of the question. Finally, the rubric attempts to clarify how the synthesis point will be awarded.
The New DBQ Rubric: A Step in the Right Direction
While the definition still seems a bit vague, it is an improvement over the original description of synthesis found in the previous version of the rubric. Students are now instructed to connect their argument to a different period, theme, or discipline.
This gives students guidance to go outside the time period and to relate their argument to similar developments in another era, which also draws a distinction between contextualization and synthesis. Just like in the Fall ofteachers will not have anchor papers from the previous year's exam reading with which to evaluate their classroom essays. They will once again be unsure how to operationalize the revised rubric since papers from the reading are not going to be helpful, due to the new revisions.
Once more teachers will be unsure exactly what contextualization or synthesis should look like in an essay. Nevertheless, the revised DBQ rubric does address many of the concerns raised by teachers after the launch of the redesigned AP U.

Doing this will help you to get a sense of what makes a good and what makes a bad DBQ response. That said, not all DBQ essay examples are created equal. Without a doubt, the best sample resources come from the College Board. This is because they are the ones who design and administer the AP exams. This means the following:. All samples are real student responses from previous yearsso you know they were written under the same conditions you'll have when you write your DBQ—in other words, they're authentic!
They not only have scores but also explanations of each essay's scorein accordance with the rubric. Some DBQ examples outside those available from the College Board might be worth looking at, particularly if they highlight how a particular essay could be improved. In general, though, a superior example will do the following:. Include the prompt and documents: It will be much easier for you to see how the information from the documents is integrated into the essay if you can actually look at the documents themselves!
Have a score: Seems simple, but you'd be surprised how many DBQ examples out there in the uncharted internet don't have one. Without a real, official score, it's hard to gauge how trustworthy a sample actually is. Here are your example essays!
The APUSH test was redesigned in and again inso there are right now only five official College Board sets of sample essays you can use in your studies. Make sure to give yourself a minute reading period and 45 minutes to write your answer. In addition, don't forget to use the current scoring guidelines when grading your own practice responses.
To look at these, click "Free-Response Questions" for a given year. Note that these examples use the old rubric which is integrated into the Scoring Guidelines for a given free-response section. General comments on the quality of the essay, outside information, and document analysis still apply, but the score is on a 9-point scale instead of the current 7-point scale, and some of the particulars will be different. Older DBQs had up to 12 documents, while the current format has seven documents.
If you do look at older DBQ examples, I recommend using the current rubric to re-grade the essays in the sample according to the 7-point scale. I'll also give more advice on how to use all these samples in your prep later on.

6 APUSH DBQ Examples to Review
The thesis sets the tone for the whole essay and clearly outlines the arguments the essay will defend. A historical defensible claim simply means is the argument you present in the thesis historical accurate. For the thesis, you must make a claim or an argument. Typically, each of the reasons you provide in your thesis will each be addressed in a body paragraph. There were also many events that led to the Revolution between and There were a number of factors that caused Americans to revolt during the twenty years prior to the Revolution. The British did not let the colonies have their own trade.
They also violated a number of individual rights. Events that showed these violations were acts such as the Stamp Act and Intolerable Acts. Probably, the most important reason was the violation of natural rights for without these there is no freedom. Excessive taxation and denial of economic self-sufficiency for well over a century were the true causes of this revolution. Enjoying the fruits of their own labor and economic liberty were prizes too big not to revolt.
Thesis 1: The student does not establish a line of reasoning for their essay. Stating the colonists were angry does not indicate the factors that caused this anger.
The introduction sentences also do not introduce the relative importance of any factors. It states that British violated economic and natural rights and states the relative importance by elevating natural rights by stating that there is no liberty without protections of natural rights.
Though the thesis is simplistic, it gets over the bar by making a claim it will try to substantiate. Thesis 3 : The student correctly identifies the underlying forces for the revolution as economic discrimination against the colonists and violations of enlightenment principles by the Crown. The student also maintains that the economic reasons for revolting were more significant thus pointing directly to the relative importance of the two factors.
If you do not specifically evaluate to this extent, you will not get the point. Because if the thesis is the first thing you write, it will then be in the introduction and it will give you direction and clarity on what to write for the remainder of the essay.
